In this exclusive interview with VENTURE, we delve into Swoozie’s journey from gamer to storyteller, exploring the moments that shaped his career, his definition of success, and how he continues to inspire the next generation of creators. We also discuss the purpose behind his work, the challenges he’s faced along the way, and his thoughts on what it takes to build a lasting legacy in the digital age.
You’ve transitioned from competitive gaming to storytelling on YouTube. What were the defining moments in your life that led you down this path?
“It was mostly just me wanting to raise the ceiling on my viewership. I started off in the fighting game community and once I had a lot of the gaming community behind me, I realized that if I stayed only doing gaming content that I would be missing out on a much larger audience, so once I started sharing more of my personal stories that viewership rose big time.”
Your content often blends humor with life lessons. What drives your creativity, and how do you infuse your work with a sense of purpose?
“I think we all have a love for creating. I love crafting stories. It’s so layered it ridiculous. I can be that friend giving relationship advice, or fashion advice but also the big brother at the same time and on a global scale.”
Balancing personal life and a career in content creation can be challenging. How do you maintain balance and stay grounded amidst the demands of success?
“Who said I had balance? I’m always on edge! Lol kidding. Nah, frequent breaks, and lots of naps. As far as staying grounded, I think something that really helped me was my time working as a lifeguard at Hard Rock Hotel. I would see TONS of celebrities come through and treat their fans like they were rodents. I always told myself if I ever get to that level where I have fans that I’d always make time for them and treat them like a priority.”
Many see YouTube as fun and games, but there’s a serious business side too. How do you navigate the business aspects, like brand deals, partnerships, and growing your brand while staying true to your creative self?
“I take brand deals but very rarely. Some brands get it but a number of them don’t. Mountain Dew prob the best brand I’ve worked with. Google also GETS IT and has never been even remotely shady. Brands like to do this thing where on the day they try to change up the rules of the game. A number of brands will agree to X but have tactics they pull to bully you into changing your mind right before cameras roll but I am not the one Morpheus.”
How has your definition of success evolved from when you first started your YouTube channel? What does success look like to you now?
“Success when I first started YouTube was just if you got 1 million views. Now success is just if you got $1 million dollars. I’m kidding, but honestly, it’s like Bob Marley said: Success is just having an abundance of something that you love.”
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career, and how have they shaped you as both a person and a professional?
“With animation, there are some BIG videos where you have 10 people looking to you for answers so constantly having to delegate… time management… making sure everybody gets paid quickly… There are so many different hats and even after all that the video that you worked so hard on might underperform and you lose money on it, so the ‘gamble’ of it all is the biggest challenge. All that multitasking definitely has shaped me in my professional and personal life.”
You’ve shared many personal experiences through your animated stories. What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from these stories that you believe everyone should know?
“We’re all human, we’re all gonna make mistakes. Failure isn’t when you get knocked down- it’s when you stay down. So COSNOP. Concentrate on solutions not on problems.”
What advice would you give to young people aspiring to start their own YouTube channels or break into the digital content space?
“Study as many YouTube videos as you can in the genre that you want to get in to. Learn how to tell a good video apart from a bad video. There are also some videos where MrBeast has given interviews with his best tips on understanding the algorithm I would definitely suggest checking those out.”
When people look back on your career 20 years from now, what do you hope they’ll remember about your work and your impact on the content creation world?
“I just hope (now as well as 20 years from now) more people see the undertones. Let’s take my Situationship video for example. Under the surface, the main function of that video is to hopefully be a warning. Navigating through life is like going down a dark hallway each day. In a lot of cases, my videos are like, “Hey I went down this hall and this is what happened… if I were you I wouldn’t go down there.” I’ve been through a lot and I’ve seen a lot so I ultimately am trying to help people get on their best timelines.”
What is next for Swoozie, What are your goals for the next chapter of your career? How do you plan to keep inspiring and entertaining your audience while pushing your creative boundaries?
“There are definitely some awesome pots on the stove that I can’t talk about right now (publicly), but maybe in one or two years time you’ll see.”
